FAQ

Here are some questions I get asked often. If you do not find the information you seek, feel free to use the contact form. I will do my best to provide you with answers.

How much do you charge for your work?
My rates depend on several factors like difficulty of the text to be translated (visual novel full of dialogues vs. context heavy strategy game; rom-com vs. historical drama), deadline, and other requirements (urgent translation, weekend or holiday delivery, type of service…), so it is hard to give you a concrete rate. Generally, I would say my services fall into the medium category rate-wise. Best way to find out what the localization of your project might cost is to message me with your expectations and we can discuss everything individually.

What genres do you translate?
For games, I am open to basically anything, and in my career in videogame localization, I encountered nearly all most known genres. I personally love variability, so whatever genre your game is, we can bring it to the Czech market together. The only thing I do not translate is gambling games.
As for books – my all-time favourites are thrillers, but I can help you with other genres, too, like horror, drama, romance, fantasy, sci-fi, young adult… I usually read a couple of chapters to determine whether my skills would benefit that particular book.

Do you provide Machine Translation Post Editing (MTPE)?
No. Czech is a complex language, so machine translation post editing more often than not only makes the work harder and more tedious. I also like to come up with creative solutions, which is something that is hardly achieved with MTPE, at least in the current state of things.

Do you provide Czech to English translation as well?
No. I am not a native English speaker, so I could not guarantee the text would be of high enough quality.

Do you translate other content as well?
Usually not. I did localize a few mobile apps and websites, and I do translate subtitles from time to time, but these are (usually long-term) cooperations from way before I started to specialize. So if you have an app or a website to localize, you can send me a message and I will assess whether I am the right candidate, taking into account my expertise in the area concerning your project.

My game contains a lot of variables and the player needs to be addressed in a gender-neutral way. Can you work with all that?
Working with variables in a way that takes into account cases and other grammatical rules of Czech language is a standard part of localization process, as well as addressing the player in a gender-neutral way, so yes, I can work with that. It might be tricky, but with a bit of creativity, nothing is impossible.

What about jokes and puns?
Honestly, jokes and wordplay is my favourite part of localization. I always try to convey jokes, puns, and other culture-specific aspects of the text to the target audience in a way that feels natural. If it is done correctly, the player/reader does not even notice the text is translated.

Why games and books, though?
Because I love stories. And because I’m a nerd and a published author myself. Simple as that. 🙂

Loxis?
It is a simplified blend of “localization” and “sis” as in sister – someone you can always count on when you need help with something, just like a real sister.
